As time goes on, more and more women are realizing that High Heel Sandals can be tricky things to wear. If you are lucky enough to be tall and slim then you can look good in any style, but if you are short or have thick calves you need to choose more wisely.


Despite the fact that wearing heels changes a woman's posture and height in a way that presumably amps up their attractiveness, the men in the experiment couldn't tell the difference between a woman who was wearing heels and one who was not (unless the heels themselves were visible).

On a similar note, men are also pretty oblivious to a woman's choice in handbags. (And we didn't even need a study to pass along that tidbit of information.)

Over the years, innumerable researchers and doctors have carried out experiments on humans and animals with the aim of finding cures to certain diseases or tapping in to the human psyche. While some were acceptable, others were grossly unethical. The following fall into the second category. 

1. Stanford Prison Experiment

This experiment was carried out at Stanford University by Philip Zimbardo. A mock prison was created and volunteers were asked to live in it for a while. However, the guards soon went out of control and their behavior became sadistic and vicious while the prisoners developed severe emotional problems.

2. Speech Therapy

The subjects of this experiment were over 20 orphan children in Iowa. The supervisor of the project, Tudor, divided the children into two groups- one group was given positive and encouraging speech therapy but the other group was not as lucky. The children in the second group were made fun of if they stuttered or made mistakes and they grew up with speech problems.

3. The Marshall Islands Experiment

Marshall Islands residents were forcefully exposed to radioactive substances in 1954. Over the years, several results were seen- women went through miscarriages, stunted growth was noticed in children and some developed thyroid cancer.

4. The CIA Experiment

This project was carried out by the CIA during the 1950s. Drugs like LSD were surreptitiously given to employees, prostitutes, those who suffered from mental problems and the general public. The motive here was to keep a track of their reactions to the drug.

5. The Removal of Homosexuality

Homosexual soldiers were forced to go through sex-change operations by the army in South Africa. Many of them were given electric shocks and subjected to chemical castration. The aim was to ‘remove homosexuality’ from the army.

6. North Korean Experiments

These experiments were carried out on women prisoners in North Korea- they were made to eat cabbage leaves that were poisoned and if they refused, their families would be punished. Each and every woman died in less than half an hour either of anal bleeding or severe vomiting. Others were led to ‘suffocation chambers’ while the supervisors looked on as they choked to death.

7. The Soviet Experiments

This experiment was supervised by the Soviet secret police agencies. They used poisons like ricin digitoxin and mustard gas on Gulag prisoners to find out whether they could find such a gas that could not be discovered by doctors when they carried out autopsies. The victims actually became shorter and died quickly.

8. The Syphilis Study

This was carried out for 40 years in Alabama and African American individuals were not allowed to recover from Syphilis. Some patients were made to undergo placebo treatments in order to evaluate the different stages in the fatal progression.

9. Unit 731

Unit 731 was an experiment carried out by the Imperial Japanese Army from 1937 to 1945. Living people were vivisected; limbs of prisoners were removed and stitched onto different parts of their bodies while the others were frozen and then thawed. Some prisoners were injected with different diseases and then studied.

10. Nazi Experiments

Nazi Experiments were carried out at Auschwitz wherein inmates were the subjects of the research. Josef Mengele focused on twins and tried to change their eye colors by injecting a wide variety of harmful chemicals into their eyes. Prisoners were also made to stand in tubs of freezing cold water to find out the best way to get rid of hypothermia.

SOMALIA

Due to military dictator ship for about 40 years the Myanmar is considered as the world’s poorest nation. Because of child labor, military influence, forced relocation of civilians, human right abuses and misuse of resources Myanmar has been widely accused by NGOs for corruption.

Poverty, repression, stagnation, nepotism, bribery and corruption all are the main features of this worst corrupt economy. Having extremely corrupt judiciary and police, there are no significant anticorruption efforts in Myanmar. The class discrimination and flow of wealth towards a specific group of people are the main cause of economical unrest. The investment has also been prohibited by US government since 1997.

IRAQ

Iraq is an extremely corrupt country. Iraq score 1.5 in corruption Index. The judiciary, senior members of Iraqi governments, ministries , public servants ,police everyone is corrupt. The recent media hype about Ophiuchus (pronounced Oh-fee-YOU-cuss), "the new 13th zodiac sign," has sent folks spinning into an astrological identity crisis -- as well as overloading our own DH web servers. But the whole thing is not even true!

"Ophiuchus has nothing to do with Astrology," said expert astrologer Rick Levine. "It's not an Astrology issue. It has to do with the stars -- it's not a sign, it's a constellation."

"There are four seasons each with a beginning, middle and end," Levine continued. "That makes 12 zodiac signs, and there's no such thing as a 13th astrological sign."

So why are people freaking out, wondering if they went to bed last night a Gemini and woke up a Taurus? Here are the answers you've been waiting for on this cosmic controversy:

What is Ophiuchus?

Ophiuchus is a large modern constellation commonly represented as a man grasping the snake represented by the constellation Serpens.

Is Ophiuchus the 13th sign?

No. It's just a constellation. Even the founding text for Astrology (Tetrabiblos by Claudius Ptolemy written 170 AD) only mentions 12 signs. A few astrologers who practice the controversial sidereal  (constellation-based) zodiac use it as the 13th zodiac sign -- and by a few we mean about 1 percent.

How did this whole myth get started?

It began when astronomy professor Parke Kunkle of Minneapolis Community and Technical College told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune about the precession of stars over time. He said "Two thousand years ago the Sun was 'in' whatever it was in. Now it's about a whole constellation off from that." Kunkle's quote went viral and was picked up by FOX News and other media outlets because people mistakenly assume that Astrology is based on constellations. But that's not true.

World Predictions For 2011

No World War 3

World famous fortune teller Baba Vanga has said that the Third World War will begin as an ordinary war at the end of 2010 and last all the way up to 2014. As luck would have it North and South Korea have had several armed conflicts starting from November last year – so there is still a possibility for this prediction to come true.

Although 85% of Baba Vangas predictions have come true I am certain that World War 3 will not happen – at least not in 2011.

Wikileaks will get harassed but will still be around

The governments of the world who have something to hide will do everything they can to get Wikileaks banned. If possible they will look for a legitimate way but most likely this will fail – instead they will make the effort to discredit anyone who has something to do with the organization. More often than not this is done in secrecy in order to leave an impression that the governments had nothing to do with it.

Obama will keep losing credibility

A lot of the things that Obama promised while running for president have not come true. For instance the closing down of the Guantanamo Bay prison that is used to hold terror suspects was originally intended by January 22nd 2010 but it will most probably still be around on January 1st 2012.

Obama’s road of small failures will continue and as a result he will be losing credibility slowly but surely.

More trouble in the Euro zone

Although my home country Estonia was the 17th nation to join the Euro zone there are dark times ahead for the currency.

We will see at least one more European country getting into trouble that is eventually bailed out.

Despite of the trouble the Euro will still be around in 2012.

Oil prices over $120 per barrel

On January 1st 2010 the oil price is 91 dollars per barrel. It is my prediction that during 2011 the price will rise to over 120 dollars per barrel – an increase of more than 30%.

The main reasons area a weak dollar and an increased demand by developing countries.

Winter storms

The heavy winter storms witnessed in 2010 in Europe and USA will continue in the winter of 2011. This will raise several questions since people have not seen such severe storms for a long time. Are we in the beginning of a short ice age?

New Apple products

Apple will release their new iPad with a camera – this will give life to a boom of video calls using Skype and Apple’s own Face time App.

The new iPhone 5 will also be released – nothing revolutionary there. In all aspects it will be slightly better than the iPhone 4 and very likely it will also be available in white. You can also hope for additional colors but they will probably debut with the iPhone 6 in 2012.

I will make a full income online

While I already make a hefty sum with my online ventures it is currently not enough to survive in luxury without a regular job. 2011 will most likely mark a year when I can start concentrating solely on my online businesses.

What the “ZIP” in “ZIP Code” Stands For & What Numbers Signify

Today I found out what the “ZIP” in “ZIP Code” stands for and what the numbers signify.

ZIP Code or “Zone Improvement Plan Code” was a system put in place by the U.S. Postal Service on July 1, 1963.  The hope was that these ZIP codes would allow the postal service to more efficiently and therefore more quickly route mail.

Before the official nation-wide ZIP code system, the U.S. Postal Service had a system of postal zones for large cities as far back as 1943.  This postal zone number would be added to the address after the city name, but before the state name. (e.g. Bilbo Baggins, 3421 Bagend, Hobbiton 27, Eriador; where “27″ is the postal zone within the city of Hobbiton)  This allowed for more efficient sorting of mail and, thus, quicker deliver times in high volume areas.

In 1944, post office employee, Robert Moon, submitted a proposal for a nation-wide postal zone system.  In Moon’s system, which was eventually slightly modified and then adopted, the first three digits would stand for the sectional center facility (SFC); an SFC is just a central mail processing facility in a certain region.  Specifically, the first digit ends up standing for a group of U.S. states (0-9 numbered from east to west, ascending) with the second and third digits representing a region in that group that is covered by some SFC.  The Postal System then added on to Moon’s system two extra numbers which indicate the post office or postal zone, within the region, the mail should go to.

Starting around 1983, the U.S. Postal service introduced the ZIP+4 system.  In this system, the 5 digit ZIP code number signifies the same thing as before and the extra 4 digits at the end signify an area within a certain post office’s coverage area.  Specifically, the six and seventh digits indicate a “delivery sector”, such as a group of streets; a group of office buildings; etc.  The last two numbers then indicate a “delivery segment” which could indicate a floor of an office building; the side of the street the address is on; etc.   This allows for more efficient sorting within a single post office that deals in high volumes of mail.

The new ZIP+4 system never really caught on with the general public and is somewhat superfluous as mail today is read by a multi-line optical character reader (MLOCR) that can almost always determine the correct ZIP+4 code for an address.  This machine also sprays a Postnet barcode on the face of the mail that corresponds to the full ZIP+4 code; thus, writing it in by hand before you mail something is generally no more efficient than not writing it in, because the automatic sorting systems the Postal Service has use this Postnet barcode, rather than the specific written address for sorting.

Bonus Factoids:

• Once the ZIP code system was put in place, the U.S. Postal Service only required that bulk mailers use the ZIP codes, though they wanted everyone to use them.  The Postal Service struggled, in the beginning, to get the general public to start using the zip codes.  They eventually more or less decided to give up on convincing adults and instead they created a cartoon character “Mr. ZIP” in order to try to get kids to start using ZIP codes.  They figured that the kids would then encourage parents to use the ZIP codes when they saw their parents leaving the ZIP codes out on mail.  Further, when the kids grew older, they would teach their kids to use ZIP codes.
• Mr. ZIP was based on a design by Howard Wilcox, who was the son of a letter carrier.  This was a design done for a New York bank that was a child-like sketch of a postman delivering a letter.  After AT&T acquired the rights to the design, they made it available to the Postal Service to use at no cost.  The Postal Service then made a few minor modifications and Mr. ZIP was born.
• The term “ZIP code” was originally registered as a servicemark, which is a type of trademark, by the U.S. Postal Service, but the registration has since expired allowing companies like UPS and FedEx to use the term freely.
• You can actually print the Postnet barcode directly onto your mail piece to make it slightly easier for the Postal Service to sort your mail (mainly skipping the step where they have to scan your mail and print the barcode on it).  Many word-processing programs, such as Microsoft Word, include a feature for doing this.
• Before the 1970s, the United States Postal Service (USPS) was named the United States Post Office Department (USPOD).
• Interestingly, the ZIP code system was first introduced because the Postal Service was beginning to be overwhelmed with the volume of mail they needed to process in a timely manner, most of which originally was processed by hand.  The ZIP code system made a handy way to increase efficiency in that way.  However, only a few years after the ZIP code system was introduced in the 1960s, the Postal Service began using the MLOCR system for automatic sorting.  Given the address, even without the ZIP code, the MLOCR system is almost always perfectly capable of assigning the ZIP+4 code to the address, with very little mail needing to be human-read to determine the correct address/ZIP code.  So in most cases, including the ZIP or ZIP+4 code with the written address doesn’t really increase mail efficiency much at all as the Postal Service’s initial scanning system can come up with those numbers for your written address on its own.
