Difference between Scanner and Printer



  • A printer is an output device, it makes a paper copy of an electronic file on your system.
  • A scanner is an input device, it makes an electronic file of an object.

  • A printer outputs an image from the computer to paper.
  • A scanner inputs the image from paper into the computer.

  • A scanner copies a image like a photo into the computer a printer puts it onto paper on from the computer.



  • Think of a photo copier. The scanner is the part you put your document on.
  • The printer is the part that gives you your copies


  • A printer will print stuff you type or a picture a scanner will scan the document onto your computer for printing also a scanner can be used to copy documents after it is put on to your computer


  • A printer makes a hard copy of document
  • A scanner makes a softcopy of document
